Please read a message below from the Canadian Member of Parliament, Joy Smith (www.joysmith.ca). You CAN do something to stop sex trafficking in Canada. Joy lists some simple acts you can do in her message. However, before you read it, here’s a FACT for you:
Countries that have legalized and regulated have seen sexual exploitation, human trafficking and violence towards women and girls increase drastically. In fact, a 2012 comprehensive study of a cross section of up to 150 counties revealed that legalizing prostitution increased sex trafficking. In contrast, countries like Sweden and Norway, which have adopted the Nordic model of prostitution, have seen a significant decrease in prostitution and sex trafficking. The Nordic model of prostitution is effective due to its three approaches: explicitly criminalizing the purchase of sexual services, a national awareness campaign to educate the public that the purchase of sexual services is harmful to women, and finally strong support programs for those who seek to exit prostitution.
Joy Smith’s message:
Today, Canada’s prostitution laws have been struck down as unconstitutional. Although losing these offences poses a grave threat to the safety and security of women and vulnerable populations, we must move forward and urge Parliament to redraft the laws in a way that reflects the Nordic approach.
We have 12 months to educate Canadians and Parliamentarians that targeting the buyers of sex and not prostituted women is the only option that reflects the inequality and violence prostitution places on women.
I want to encourage you to consider taking up one or all of the following Action Points:
- Forward this these Action Points to your friends and networks.
- Download and sign a petition calling on Parliament to implement the Nordic model. Petition can be downloaded here:http://www.joysmith.ca/assets/petition%20swedish%20model%20of%20prositution%20-%20eng%20-%20final%20-%20large%20font.pdf
- Write a letter to the Prime Minister of Canada and the Justice Minister of Canada and your MP asking for legislation that reflects the Nordic model and protects women.
Letters can be addressed to:
The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P.
Prime Minister of Canada

- Educate and raise awareness about the harm prostitution causes to women and youth. One great way is to host a screening of Red Light Green Light in your community.
Interesting and yet sad article below from CNN. Svay Pak village is known around the world as a place where pedophiles come to prey on little children as young as 4 years old. Extreme poverty causing parents to be in desperate situations is causing the SUPPLY. Mainly Europeans and North American cowardly men who have completely lost the sense of righteousness and succumbed to their internal demons are the DEMAND.
Raising awareness and moving people to action is the only way we have a shot at eliminating sex trafficking. CNN is doing their part. How about you?
Today is the National Human Trafficking Awareness Day in the US. I had started this blog back in 2011 after being seeing for the first time the video below. Before that day, I had never heard of sex trafficking or even thought of what human trafficking was. Me being part Cambodian, this particular video definitely struck a nerve.
Please check it out and know that this horror is not just happening in Asia. It’s occurring right in our own backyards here in North America.
If you are moved by this, please LIKE our Facebook page to learn more and see what you can do.
If you have 7 min. to spare, please take a look at this trailer about 2 guys making a difference and exposing the dark world of sex trafficking in Asia. It must’ve been frightening, dangerous, frustrating, heart-breaking for them to go through with this project and pretending to be predators, but this is what’s need to let the truth of what is really happening come out. This is what is needed to turn ignorance or un-awareness into action. Looks like the DVD is only available in Australia and New Zealand now. Hopefully, it can be made available to the rest of the world soon.
Here’s a video that doesn’t need words to explain the horrors of what young girls go through in the sex trafficking industry. In some countries, girls as young as 6 – 8 years old are forced to service up to 40 men a day and threatened on a daily basis that not only will they be beaten if they don’t comply, but that their own families will be killed even though there are in a country far far away. Scars heal, but it’s the psychological control, fear and torture that really suck the life out of these young girls.
They need our help. What will YOU do? Send us an email if you’d like to start volunteering with us or the organization highlighted in the video. Thank you.
